چکیده

When representing DNA molecules as words, it is necessary to take into account the fact that a word u encodes basically the same information as its Watson–Crick complement θ(u), where θ denotes the Watson–Crick complementarity function. Thus, an expression which involves only a word u and its complement can be still considered as a repeating sequence. In this context, we define and investigate the properties of a special class of primitive words, called pseudo-primitive words relative to θ or simply θ-primitive words, which cannot be expressed as such repeating sequences. For instance, we prove the existence of a unique θ-primitive root of a given word, and we give some constraints forcing two distinct words to share their θ-primitive root. Also, we present an extension of the well-known Fine and Wilf theorem, for which we give an optimal bound. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Factor complexity of infinite words associated with non-simple Parry numbers

The factor complexity of the infinite word uβ canonically associated to a non-simple Parry number β is studied. Our approach is based on the notion of special factors introduced by Berstel and Cassaigne. At first, we give a handy method for determining infinite left special branches; this method is applicable to a broad class of infinite words which are fixed points of a primitive substitution....

Flag-transitive Point-primitive symmetric designs and three dimensional projective special linear groups

The main aim of this article is to study (v,k,λ)-symmetric designs admitting a flag-transitive and point-primitive automorphism group G whose socle is PSL(3,q). We indeed show that the only possible design satisfying these conditions is a Desarguesian projective plane PG(2,q) and G > PSL(3,q).

Ins-Robust Primitive Words

Let Q be the set of primitive words over a finite alphabet with at least two symbols. We characterize a class of primitive words, QI , referred to as ins-robust primitive words, which remain primitive on insertion of any letter from the alphabet and present some properties that characterizes words in the set QI . It is shown that the language QI is dense. We prove that the language of primitive...

Primitive Words Are Unavoidable for Context-Free Languages

We introduce the concept of unavoidability of languages with respect to a language class; this means that every language of the given class shares at least some word with the unavoidable language. Several examples of such unavoidabilities are presented. The most interesting one is that the set of primitive words is unavoidable for context-free languages that are not linear. 1 The Language of Pr...
